Yachats is a village of about 725 permanent residents in rural south Lincoln County, Oregon. It is shoehorned between the Pacific Ocean and the Siuslaw National Forest, where the Yachats River and the Coastal Range meet the ocean. The Yachats area includes another 1,500 souls. This place of amazing natural beauty and serenity includes crashing waves on the rocky coast and gently lapping surf on sandy beaches.
The people of Yachats have a strong sense of community inspired by and honoring the natural beauty of this place they call home. A community envisioning process in 2000 identified seven core values of our coastal village:
-
- a sense of place
- natural environment
- small-town atmosphere
- welcoming spirit
- independence
- cooperation
- uniqueness
The main industries of the greater Yachats area are tourism and retirement including hospitality, retail, restaurants, and services catering both to visitors and locals. The high tourist season is from June through October, but many visitors also come each winter for storm-watching, whale watching, and other activities.
The Yachats City Council created this shared vision of Yachats:
“Our village is a place where natural resources are valued and protected, where diversity is celebrated, and where a vibrant economy and sense of community pride create and recreate a living spirit. Yachats cares not just for its citizens’ basic needs but also supports them in their efforts to excel mentally, physically, artistically, and spiritually. It is a community with an enduring sense of itself.”
